Doctoral Minor

Doctoral Minor in Qualitative Methods in Education

A minor in Qualitative Research Methodology & Methods in Education provides important grounding for students interested in doing a dissertation employing qualitative methods.  It also complements a focus on quantitative methods so that students would come out of the graduate program with knowledge and expertise in research methodology (more than a set of tools but a theoretical understanding of the foundation and development of tool implementation).  Upon graduation, a student with this minor would be well positioned to teach qualitative methods, to advise graduate students on using qualitative methods, or to evaluate and design research using qualitative methods.

Requirements for the minor
The Ph.D. minor in Qualitative Methods & Methodology in Education is comprised of 12 credits.  These credits are for coursework above and beyond foundation courses in the departments.  Three courses are to be taken by all students interested in the Ph.D minor and the courses are cross listed among C&I, EP, ELPA, EPS, and EPS:

  1. Introduction to Qualitative Research (719)
  2. Field Methods I (788)
  3. Field Methods II (789)

These core courses may be taken any time during graduate coursework.  The remaining course will come from elective qualitative research methods courses taken in the SoE or in other related departments.  Elective courses must be approved by the Steering Committee as having sufficient content in Qualitative Research Methods. See section on Qualitative Methods courses at UW.
