In this course, we’ll look at the technique and practice of several basic African dance forms with study of their individual musical, historical and cultural contexts.

Meet Your Professor
Maya Kadakia is currently an Associate Lecturer in the UW-Madison Dance Department teaching African Dance. She is a professional dancer and teacher who possesses an understanding of the cultural traditions of West African dance, an acute sense of rhythm, an engaging and patient teaching persona, and a passionate, creative ability to express herself through movement. She is multi-skilled in various West African traditions and is able to translate those skills into performances well-suited to Western audiences which express the amazing tradition, culture and history of West Africa. She is currently involved in two companies based in Madison, Kikeh Mato Afro-Pop and Limanya Drum and Dance Ensemble. (Source)
