The syllabus below is an overview. Please download and keep a version of the printed syllabus for a full explanation of objectives, grading, and course policies.

Course Overview:

This course is intended to introduce students to the field of Kinesiology and the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Introductory material about physical activity and health will be provided, and departmental faculty and invited speakers will discuss their areas of expertise. In addition, career opportunities in Kinesiology will be discussed. IMPORTANT!!  This couse is taught in a blended format. Blended courses (also known as hybrid or mixed-mode courses) are classes where a portion of the traditional face-to-face instruction is replaced by web-based online learning. This means that you will have one class day to prepare for our weekly face-to-face meeting by going through a series of online materials. Each week we will cover a different topic. IMPORTANT!!  This class has a blended format that includes some face to face class time and some online class time.  Each week we will cover a different topic.  The first two weeks of class we will meet face to face on both Tuesday and Thursday.  We will meet again face to face on October 25th, 27th, and November 1st and 3rd.  For each of the rest of the weeks we will only meet face to face on Thursdays. You should complete the rest of material for the topic on your own. It is your responsibility to complete the rest of material for the topic on your own.

Got a question?
If you have a question about any of the course content you can post in on the Learn@UW discussion board under “Muddy Points”. Remember if you have a question there is a chance one of your classmates had the same question; don’t be afraid to post a question for the group.

Course Philosophy:
This course seeks to create a learning atmosphere that is comfortable, open, and conducive to student participation. The instructors hope to promote active learning through online dialogue, discussion, and peer interactions.  A significant portion of the course is dedicated to Presentations. These examples will take on many forms: power points, lectures, videos, and panel discussions with visiting professionals and will explore applied, clinical and research professions that are associated with the topic areas presented in the course. Student access to all of these experiences is an essential ingredient to success in the course.
