Undergraduate Program

At present, there is no undergraduate program in Educational Communications and Technology. However, some undergraduate students choose to take the course Curriculum & Instruction 514 – Instructional Computing in Schools I. This is a 3 credit course on methods and materials for using computers in school curriculum and instruction.

Masters Program

The Masters program in ECT is designed to familiarize students with current theory and issues in educational and interactive educational technologies. It also seeks to familiarize students with the professional literature published in the broad are of educational communications and technology. The program also endeavors to acquaint students with the critical analysis of design, production, evaluation, and use of educational media messages in today's schools and society. The program also helps students to develop the ability to identify significant educational problems, to investigate those problems and report results in a scholarly manner.

Students in the Masters Program with a background in educationshould take 15 credits (5 courses) in the Educational Communications and Technology program and 9 credits (3 courses) outside of ECT. These courses may be inside or outside the Curriculum & Instruction Department (total: 24 credits).

Students who do not have a background in the field of education are required to take 12 additional credits in Educational Foundations (total: 36 credits).

All Masters students also complete a Masters Thesis or Project and a Masters Exam.

Ph.D. Program

The program will develop the abilities necessary to participate in scholarly inquiry and publication in concert with the international community of scholars working to improve the area of educational communications and interactive educational technologies through research and theory building.

The program will prepare scholars in the critical analysis of design, production, evaluation and use of educational media messages in the schools and society.

The program will develop students who assume positions of leadership in professional organizations devoted to the improvement of the area of educational communications and technology and the national and international level.

The minimum courseload for Ph.D. students is 32 credit hours beyond a Masters Degree with at least 12 credits taken at or above the 500 level excluding the courses C&I 690- Independent Field Work, C&I 699- Independent Reading, C&I 990- Research Thesis or 999-Independent Reading. These courses do not count towards the 32 credits beyond the Masters. 3 credits in methodology are required.
