Module #12: Biomechanics

Biomechanics is the application of the mechanical laws of physics and engineering to the motion, structure, and functioning of all living systems, including plants and animals. In this chapter, however, we will restrict our interest to human movement biomechanics, as defined in the next section. The subdiscipline of kinesiology in which we use mechanical laws that determine how we move during physical activity, and how forces act on our bodies to affect the structure and functioning of our bodies, is biomechanics of physical activity, also known as human movement biomechanics. The formal definition of human movement biomechanics, therefore, is the study of the structure and function of human beings using the principles and methods of mechanics of physics and engineering.
