How do you know what you know?
As we dig deeper into a course of study (say you become a Kinesiology major!) and acquire knowledge there will come a time when we have to share that knowledge. This sharing of knowledge can take many forms. We can answer questions of our friends, maybe we have a job where we put our knowledge to work, or maybe we have to write a paper for an academic exercise.
Hmm, let’s take a minute and focus this last question. Writing a paper is a way to demonstrate our knowledge on a topic. However we usually don’t have quite enough info so we have to use other people’s knowledge to make our point. This requires knowing the following:
Where can I find information?
How can I differentiate scholarly from popular information?
How can I put that information to use in a paper?
How can properly cite the information that is NOT MY OWN as not to plagiarize?
That is what we are asking you to do in this final week of the class. Dig into a topic, find proper information and share that information in the form of a paper.
Remember, learning is the process of taking information you have, adding new information, and synthesizing that into new knowledge.
Bright people are curious and they always want to know what they don’t know and they want to know how they know what they do know (if you can follow my logic).
Don’t think of this as just an assignment. You are adding new information to old information and coming away with new knowledge; careful you might just LEARN.
Required Reading and Presentations:
Please read this handout on recognizing scholarly vs poular literature and the critical evaluatino of resources
Listen with care to this presentation on Finding Resources in Kinesiology it will set the stage for you paper!
- Describe the differences between popular and scholarly literature.
- Demonstrate the application of current literature in kinesiology by writing a paper and using the literature to support your answer to a question.
- Explain the limiations of common web (popular) resources and why they should be avoided in scholarly work.
This assignment requires you to search for and read scholarly articles on an issue related to kinesiology and create a possible solution to that issue. Please read the attached instructions with care. You will be answering a question. Questions are assigned based on your last name. Here is a sample paper to give you an idea of tone, length, and use of resources.
The final research paper is due on August 10th.
