Module #5: Exercise Psychology

This unit discusses the psychology of physical activity in relation to the specific areas of sport and exercise. Sport psychology and exercise psychology have developed into two distinct areas of study in the physical activity field. Exercise psychology is devoted to the study of the psychological aspects of fitness, exercise, health, and wellness. In contrast sport psychology focuses more on the psychological aspects of competitive sport participation. Both aspects are covered in the chapter reading. Exercise psychology also deals with the psychophysiology and psychobiology associated with exercise. Researchers are investigating the underlying physiologic mechanisms in the brain that are influenced by exercise and sport. All students who graduate from the Dept. of Kinesiology take at least one required class in Exercise Psychology as part of the core offerings in our degree programs.
