Module #6: Exercise Physiology

This chapter introduces the subdiscipline of Exercise Physiology (Physiology of Physical Activity) and establishes the relationship of exercise physiology with other scholarly subdisciplines in the discipline of kinesiology. After this module you will have a better understanding of the important role exercise physiology plays in many aspects of physical activity. Exercise physiologists can help athletes achieve peak performance, help people understand how to safely participate in activity, conduct research to help understand the role of activity in the prevention and treatment of diseases, and allow us to better understand how our bodies adapt to extreme conditions (e.g. hot and cold) while exercising. Understanding both short term and long term adaptations to exercise is a foundational knowledge for students who study in the Dept. of Kinesiology. All students who graduate from the Dept. of Kinesiology take at least one class in Exercise Physiology. It is a subdiscipline of both Kinesiology and Physiology and a cousin to biochemistry and nutrition. It is an exciting area with a rich history.
